The Social Security Payment Schedule Explained
Your payment date depends on your birth date, when you started benefits, and whether you get SSI. Weekends and holidays move payments earlier, which is why some months show two deposits.
Most Social Security beneficiaries are paid on a Wednesday set by their birth date: the 2nd Wednesday for birthdays on the 1st to 10th, the 3rd Wednesday for the 11th to 20th, and the 4th Wednesday for the 21st to 31st. People who started benefits before May 1997 are paid on the 3rd of the month. SSI is paid on the 1st. When a payment date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the money is sent on the business day before. That is why some months bring two SSI payments and the next month brings none.
If a deposit arrived early, or a month seems to have two payments or none, the rules below explain it. The table lists the dates through January 2027.
Which schedule applies to you
For most people getting retirement, survivor or disability benefits, the payment date depends on the day of the month they were born:
- Born 1st to 10th: paid the second Wednesday of the month.
- Born 11th to 20th: paid the third Wednesday of the month.
- Born 21st to 31st: paid the fourth Wednesday of the month.
If you receive benefits on someone else's work record, such as a spouse's, the date follows that person's birthday.
Two groups are on other schedules:
- Started before May 1997. You are paid on the 3rd of every month, whatever your birth date.
- SSI (Supplemental Security Income). Paid on the 1st of the month.
If you receive both Social Security and SSI, you get two deposits: SSI on the 1st and Social Security on the 3rd.

We worked these dates out from SSA's rules. Four are earlier than usual:
- October 3 is a Saturday, so that payment goes out Friday, October 2.
- November 1 is a Sunday, so November's SSI is paid Friday, October 30.
- The second Wednesday of November is Veterans Day, so that payment goes out Tuesday, November 10.
- January 1 is a holiday and January 3 is a Sunday, so both January payments go out Thursday, December 31.

Why it can look like you got paid twice
When the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, SSI is paid on the last business day of the month before. The result is a month with two SSI deposits followed by a month with none.
It has happened once already in 2026. August 1 was a Saturday, so August's SSI payment arrived July 31. July showed two deposits and August showed none.
It happens twice more this year:
- October: SSI arrives October 1 and again October 30. The second one is November's payment. No SSI arrives in November.
- December: SSI arrives December 1 and again December 31. The second one is January's payment, and it is the first to include the 2027 cost-of-living increase. No SSI arrives in January.
The total for the year does not change. An early payment is not a bonus, and the missing month is not a cut. Since the early deposit has to last through the following month, plan rent and bills around it.
If your payment doesn't arrive
- Check the table above to see whether the date moved because of a weekend or holiday.
- Wait three more mailing days. SSA asks for this before it will trace a payment.
- Ask your bank whether a deposit is pending.
- Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, or look at your my Social Security account.
